Dr Roland Ibenipere Funwei has BSc in Human Physiology from University of Port Harcourt, MSc and Ph.D in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He is a Clinical Pharmacology Scientist and molecular biologist. His research expertise is chemotherapy of tropical diseases (malaria genomics). He delved into malaria research under the mentorship of Prof. Catherine O. Falade as a postgraduate supervisee.  Findings from his MSc thesis answered the question of the cardiac safety of the first-line antimalarial drugs (artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine) in the treatment of acute uncomplicated malaria in children from southwest Nigeria. His Ph.D was co-supervised by Prof. Olusola Ojurongbe from the Department of Medical Microbiology, LAUTECH, Ogbomosho. His Ph.D dissertation centered on malaria genomics, particularly on molecular diagnostics, genotype profiling of antigenic Plasmodium falciparum surface proteins and surveillance of antimalarial drugs resistance. Findings from his Ph.D dissertation  was the first to report Plasmodium falciparum histidine rich protein-2 (Pfhrp-2/3) genes deletion from clinical samples from Nigeria. Currently, Dr Roland is a Faculty member, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Babcock University, Ogun State, Nigeria.

He is a mid-career malaria researcher, Pharmacology lecturer with several publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals. He is a team player, enthusiastic to learn new skills and innovations.
