The Grantsmanship and Mentorship Training Program targets early career researchers selected from research and academic institutions across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. It focuses on building capacity of the trainees to conceptualize and develop high quality research proposals capable of attracting international and local grants. The training sessions are facilitated by a mix of diverse and highly skilled international and local researchers with verifiable track records of winning highly competitive international and local grants.

I am Dr. Christa Obode, a Chief Research Officer in the Nutrition and Toxicology Division of the Food Technology Department, Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Lagos. I am a Biochemist having obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Delta State University, Abraka (2006), a Master’s degree from the University of Ibadan (2010), and a doctorate from Covenant University (2020). My research interests include the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals for the management of metabolic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. I have actively participated in research works on medicinal foods/plants, malnutrition, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.

I am currently a Principal Investigator for an institutional-funded project on the development of functional beverages for the management of hypertension and a co-investigator for several other projects. I have about 20 peer-reviewed publications to my credit. Beyond laboratory research, my long-term goal is to contribute to public health research outcomes by providing validated solutions for the management of metabolic diseases. I also engage in collaborative research and consultancy services.

Oluwaseun Adeolu Ogundijo
Lecturer

Affiliated Institution/Location: University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria

Dr. Oluwaseun Ogundijo is a public health veterinarian, who obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Distinctions) and Masters of Veterinary Public Health (First Class) from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. He is currently an early-career lecturer, researcher, and Clinical Registrar at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), in the same institution. His research interest is in the epidemiology of infectious diseases, disease ecology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and One Health. He has published more than five publications in peer-reviewed journals, with strong collaborations within and outside Africa. Administratively, he served as a Sub-Dean in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, U.I., where he provided mentorship and professional guidance to undergraduate students both academically and emotionally. He is passionate about societal growth and well-being driven through the advancement of public health outcomes in Nigeria and Africa at large.

He is a registered veterinary surgeon with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, and a member to several learned societies such as; Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC), COVID-19 Clinical Research Coalition, Wildlife Disease Association (WDA), The Global Health Data Science Network, and many more. He is open to PhD opportunities and research collaborations in his field of interest.

Salwa Shehu Dawaki
Senior Lecturer

I am Salwa Shehu Dawaki, PhD. I had a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, then a Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Parasitology. I have 24 years of working experience, I first worked with Kano State Hospitals Management Board as a Scientific Officer and then Kano State Ministry of Health as Lecturer at School of Health Technology Kano. Currently, am a Senior Lecturer at Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State. I teach and supervise projects of both undergraduate and postgraduate students of Biology, Zoology, and Parasitology. I am also a visiting Lecturer at Capital City University Kano. I am very interested in research on Parasitology/Public health and Epidemiology thus published many articles in local and international journals.

I am part of the research team in our Department at FUD; some of the recent research conducted include;

  1. Insecticide resistance monitoring (IRM) in Jigawa State supported by Global Fund, NMEP, and NIMR.
  2. Baseline survey of Female Genital Schistosomiasis in Jigawa State Nigeria.

I am a registered member of some professional bodies including Nigerian Society of Microbiology (in 2009), Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigerian (in 2019), Malaysian Society of Parasitology (in 2014) and Neglected Tropical Disease Society (FUD) (in 2019).

Dr Sinodukoo Eziuzo Okafo
Associate Professor

Dr. Sinodukoo Eziuzo Okafo is a pharmacist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. He obtained a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from University of Jos, Jos in 1996, Master of Pharmacy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2012 and 2017 respectively. He is a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. He attended a three-week training program on “Grantsmanship and Mentorship” organized by the NIMR Foundation in October 2022 and this has immensely enhanced his research and collaboration capabilities.

He has over fifty scholarly articles published in both local and international peer-reviewed journals. His research interests include, formulation of novel drug delivery systems, formulation of phytomedicines, and sourcing of excipients and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) from local raw materials. He has successfully extracted pharmaceutical grade starch and antimicrobials from the seeds, and microcrystalline cellulose from the husk of Pterocarpus santalinoides. He has formulated some locally sourced APIs into niosomes, nanoemulsions and nanogels.

Danladi Bojude Adamu
Professor of Epidemiology & Community Oncology/Chief Consultant Clinical Oncologist 

Affiliated Institution and location:  Gombe State University, Gombe, Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe.

Professor Adamu is a clinician, academic, epidemiologist, healthcare administrator and health services researcher with interest in primary care, health system strengthening and health security. He graduated MBBS from the University of Maiduguri in 2004, and obtained MSc Epidemiology and Medical Statistics from the University of Ibadan in 2012 and PhD Population Health Sciences from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom in 2022. He is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College and West African College of Surgeons (FMCR and FWACS) in Clinical Oncology. He has had further research, clinical, leadership and advocacy related trainings from prestigious institutions namely: the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Lagos; World Bank Institute; TDR-WHO-UNDP; UICC; NCI Egypt; Max Hospital India; and the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Currently, his research focuses on understanding HIV-HPV co-infections; infectious diseases and cancer congruities; pandemic preparedness and response; including health system readiness for community-based interventions. His 2022 NIMR cohort is supported by NIMR foundation on a grant to promote HPV self-sampling among women at community-based pharmacies and PPMVs in low- and medium-income countries.

Basira Kankia Lawal
Senior Lecturer

Dr. Lawal is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Management, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kaduna State University, Nigeria. She has over nine (9) years teaching experience, with additional administrative roles and responsibilities. She has a broad background in clinical pharmacy with key research interests in patient safety, health services research, and mixed methods research.

She currently serves as the principal investigator for an Institutional Based Research (IBR) grant on utilisation of community pharmacies in enhancing primary healthcare services in Kaduna state, Nigeria, which is funded by the Nigerian Tertiary Education Trust Fund Institutional Based Research (TETFund IBR). In 2023, she participated at the 1st Healthcare Innovation Week organized by the Africa Center for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), Bayero University Kano where she pitched an idea on household waste medicine disposal program through the use of community pharmacies, for which she received a seed grant prize. Additionally, she is a co-investigator on a TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) for a research to investigate and develop herbal anti- breast cancer agents from medicinal plants used in north-western Nigeria.

She is a member of the Pharmacy Scholars Initiative (PSI), a mentorship group that supports research activities.

Istifanus Anekoson Joshua
Professor of Community Health

Affiliated Institution and location: Kaduna State University and Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, Nigeria.

He holds Bachelor of Medicine & bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Master of International Affairs & Diplomacy (MIAD), Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Development Studies & Policy Analysis (MDSPA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Preventive. He is a fellow of West African College of Physicians (FWACP).

Joshua has attended courses at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine Pembroke, Liverpool (UK); John Hopskins School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland (USA) and Harvard School of Public Health, Boston (USA), among others. He served as Nigeria volunteer for the Technical Aid Corps Scheme in Rwanda from 2005-2007 and coordinated the activities of the Volunteers.

His area of research include: environmental Health, Antimicrobial resistance, Disaster Management, One Health, molecular epidemiology and public health nutrition in emergencies. He has published over 100 articles in peer reviewed journals and is a reviewer for several peer review journals. The areas he needs training are disease modelling, Bioinformatics and application Geographical Information System in public health, among others.

Dr. Adesola Helen Oniye
Senior Lecturer

Affiliated Institution and location:  Lead City University, toll-gate area, Ibadan, Oyo-State.

I am a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a Lecturer, with Ph.D in Chemical Pathology from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. My academic training and research experience have provided me with an excellent background in multiple biological disciplines. My long term research interests involves oncology, endocrinology, nutrition and metabolism. My Ph.D thesis was titled “Insulin-like growth factor-1, Testosterone and Components of Metabolic Syndrome in Nigerian males with Prostate Cancer Before and After Bilateral Orchidectomy”. The findings revealed insulin-like growth factor-1 could be a valuable prognostic indicator for prostate cancer, and having metabolic syndrome and prostate cancer together enhanced cardiovascular risk factors. I have published in high impact journals and possess excellent research skills, I have high regard for excellence and a great team player. I maintain a high sense of responsibility and highly motivated, focused with great innovation.

I’m currently the Head, Medical Laboratory Science Department, Lead City University, Ibadan, a Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (FWAPCMLS) and a Fellow of the institute of Policy Management and Leadership Development (FIPMLD) and member of the International Federation of Clinical Chemist (IFCC). I have the expertise, leadership, training, and motivation necessary to successfully carry out research projects.

Rebecca Oziohu Omosimua
Research Scientist

Affiliated Institution and location: Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Lagos.

Dr. Rebecca Oziohu Omosimua is a research scientist at the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria with a background in Cell and Molecular Biology. Rebecca has a passion to develop safe, effective, quality and affordable vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics against both infectious and non-communicable diseases. Her ultimate goal is to improve Nigeria’s response in the case of epidemic or pandemic outbreaks by building capacity for self-sufficient vaccine manufacture and therapeutic antibody research and development in Nigeria.

She is currently utilizing bioinformatics and synthetic biology tools to design and develop quality vaccine candidates against COVID-19 and Lassa fever and is also developing capacity to produce Lassa antibodies as therapeutics and diagnostics in her lab.

Dr. Olanrewaju Ibikunle Ibigbami
Senior Lecturer

Dr. Olanrewaju Ibikunle Ibigbami is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mental Health, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist (Child and Adolescent) at the Department of Mental Health, Wesley Guild Hospital Unit of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ilesha, Nigeria.

His research focus is on mental health issues among children, adolescents, and young adults. These cut across populations in secondary schools, undergraduates, patients with mental illnesses, and their caregivers. His research among undergraduate students explored the relationship between personality traits, risky sexual behaviour, and alcohol use. He has been involved in studies that have looked at the correlates of alcohol use among undergraduates, and the role of personality profile and psychopathology among undergraduate students exposed to dating violence. He has also been involved in exploring the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health in Nigeria, and the interphase between mental health and oral health.

Since his participating in the GMTP 2022, he has facilitated capacity building workshops and seminars for grantsmanship and mentoring among early career researchers in Osun State.

Nana Awaya Emeribe
Public Health Physician

Affiliated Institution and location: Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos Plateau state

Nana Awaya Emeribe, a Public Health Physician with the Department of Community Medicine at the Jos University Teaching Hospital. A fellow of the National College and a member of the West African College of Physicians with an MPH from the University of Lagos Akoka. Areas of interest include Public Health Nutrition, Health Education and Management. I enjoy training healthcare workers for better impact and service delivery.

A national trainer for the CRISP program in Nigeria, A master trainer on Interpersonal Communication and counselling in collaboration with Breakthrough Action Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Health. Currently, the state president of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Plateau state Branch. A nonprofit organizations that offers voluntary services to women, girls and children.

Dr. Oyebola Oluwagbemiga, Sonuga
Hospital Consultant/Adjunct Lecturer

I attended Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye for my undergraduate medical training and was awarded MBBS degree in 2007. I enrolled for masters’ program at the University of Ibadan and was awarded M.Sc. degree in Chemical Pathology in 2014, with eligibility to proceed to PhD, which I have commenced and made positive progress. I had my residency training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan and was awarded a Fellowship degree of West African College of Physician (Lab Med) in April 2018. I am also a Fogarty Fellow in the NIH/Fogarty D43 training program, S-CaRT Cohort 3.

I am enthusiastic about scholarship and committed to learning. Part of my research focus is epigenetics of non-communicable diseases. My interest is in studying of the interaction between genetics and environmental factors leading to the development of chronic diseases principally cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. As Hospital Consultant I review reports of laboratory investigations and co-manage metabolic syndrome with other fellow Clinicians. I have been actively involved in research, training and teaching of students and resident doctors for couple of years now. I have excellent communication skills, teaching ability and always ready to learn. I have good interpersonal relationship with everyone I work with.

Olufemi Ogundeji Ogundipe

I am a university lecturer at physiology department, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, with sixteen years work experience of training students in core physiology. Zwanden Sule Yahaya

Dr. Zwanden Sule Yahaya is a Pharmacist with a passion for research and academia. Gloria Esigbemi Patrick- Ferife

Dr Gloria Patrick – Ferife MBBS, FNMCOphth, MSC. A Clinical/ Public Health Ophthalmologist and Health System Manager, with experience in clinical practice, medical services and rural health/Eye care programme management.

A 1991 graduate of the University of Benin, Benin – city, she has a fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College and a Master of Science degree in Public Health for Eye Care from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan through a grant from the Christoffel Blinden Mission. Career interest is in designing and implementing health policies and strategies, health system management, health care financing, health research and medical waste management. Also interested in the implementation of primary health care and the mainstreaming of eye health.

She is currently the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Technical Education, Delta State, Asaba and runs a part time ophthalmic practice. She is a co – founder and project director of a non-governmental organisation – Eye Care Health Initiative which focuses on bringing eye health to the doorsteps of the community. Dr Gloria Patrick – Ferife is married with three children. A devout Christian of the catholic faith and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, knights of St. John International.

Kayode Ajayi

Aniefiok John Udoakang

Dr Yohanna Musa Usman

Dr Yohanna Musa Usman is a Physician who is practicing as an Anaesthetist and an Anatomist who is lecturing medical students. Lydia Oluwatoyin Ayayi

Oluwatoyin Ajayi is a lecturer and a Researcher in the field of Nutrition and Reproductive Biochemistry. She completed her doctorate in the year 2021 with interest in various treatments for metabolic diseases and reproductive impairments. She is experienced in different basic and molecular laboratory techniques. She has not only had to work with a team to conduct intervention researches, she has also designed experiments independently for undergraduate students.

She has five years of teaching experience as a University Lecturer and as student advisor. Dr Lawan Hassan Adamu

Dr Lawan is senior lecturer in Human Anatomy with over a decade of experience in teaching, research and mentoring of young academics. His area of research involves defining and developing non-invasive measures of health; nutrition, chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, neurodevelopmental and genetic disorders etc.) and human identity (forensic perspective). He explored the role of anthropometric and molecular biomarkers in diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. He has passion and commitment to public health which encourage him to pursue additional degree in public health with specialization in epidemiology and he is currently an active collaborator in Global Burden of Diseases (GDB); the largest comprehensive effort to quantify the impact of diseases, injuries, and risk factors on population health worldwide. This effort is led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. He demonstrates skills and competence in Biostatistics and Computational Biology. Dr Lawan is among the first cohort to be trained on leadership skills in nutrition under a two years’ program; Leadership Development for Accelerated Progress in Nutrition in Nigeria (LEDA-NN). Ocheme Julius Okojokwu

Matthew Idowu Olatubi

Abdullahi Hussein Umar

Dr. Bolajoko Abidemi Adewara

Bolajoko Adewara is a clinician, surgeon, teacher and researcher. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Ophthalmology, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. She co-founded the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital Complex, Ondo, Nigeria in 2014 (formerly Ondo State Trauma and Surgical Centre, Ondo). She also established and currently heads the Oculoplastics, Orbit and Oncology Unit of the Department of Ophthalmology, OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. She was awarded the Fellowships of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Ophthalmology (FMCOph) in November 2013 and the International Council of Ophthalmologists (FICO) in October 2014.

She won two awards for speciality training in Oculoplasty, Orbit and Ocular Oncology at the prestigious LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India (LVPEI) sponsored by the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium (CEHC) in 2016 and the International Ophthalmological Fellowship Foundation (IOFF) – Dr Theiss Naturwaren and Dieter Mann Subspecialty Fellowship Award in 2021. She is the current General Secretary for the Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Association of Nigeria (2022 -2024). Dr. Abdulkabir Babajide Adegoke

I am a Public Health Physician with a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology and Research Methods from Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH). During my training at BUSPH, I contributed to a multi-centre randomized study evaluating the effectiveness of tobacco treatment advocates on smoking cessation among public housing residents in Boston.

On completion of my studies, I joined the Medical Practice Evaluation Center of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) as a research assistant where I played a key role on outcomes analyses addressing aspects of HIV care utilization in Nigeria. Currently, I serve as a Senior Registrar at the Department of Community Health, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, where I am involved in administrative, clinical and research activities.

Through collaborative partnerships, I am engaged in multiple projects including WHO/NCDC surveillance activities on intussusception and ROTA virus, assessing health security capacities at state (sub-national) level, and providing mentorship to disease surveillance and notification officers (DSNOs).

My research interests focus on the role of metabolic and behavioural risk factors in the development of NCDs among university students and anti-retroviral medication adherence and associated health risk behaviours among HIV positive youth in Lagos, Nigeria.

Ijeoma Maryjoy Ifeorah

Her research focuses on understanding virus evolution and the intricate link between host and pathogens in virus-induced cancers.  Ifeorah’s career vision is to be a globally recognized independent researcher and a team lead in projects that contribute to the understanding of genetic/genomic factors driving infection related oncogenesis, with a view to yield evidence that can inform the development of personalized therapeutics, novel biomarkers for early and point-of -care diagnosis in Africa. Abdulfattah, Isa

Dr.Uzoma is a senior lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka and an adjunct research fellow at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) Yaba, Lagos. She has collaborated with researchers both locally and internationally and has published in reputable journals. She is also a bioinformatics and translational research scientist, who is engaged in the development of bioinformatics skills among undergraduate and postgraduate students in science, engineering and statistics at the University of Nigeria Nsukka. She is especially interested in transferring these skills girls and women in science.

She received the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP) grant on ethics strengthening in 2012 and was also a recipient of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and  Harambee Guadalupe grants in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Dr Fakunle has several awards to his name including the American Society for Human Genetics (ASHG’s) Resource Limited Award, the World Stroke Congress (WSC) Young Investigator Award, the H3Africa Travel Fellowship and so on.

His expertise is in environmental epidemiology with focus on exposure science, housing and health, air pollution, and air quality. Dr Fakunle is the Co-Principal Investigator for the CARDINAL project which was supported by the World Heart Federation (WHF). He has collaborated with scientists from other fields and he is interested in collaboration with other people.
Sherif is a member of Teaching and Research in Natural Sciences for Development in Africa (TReND) and regularly organises or participates in outreach activities to inspire the next generation of scientists. Uwaifiokun Julius Okhuarobo, is a dedicated medical practitioner, field epidemiologist, seasoned global health researcher with over seven years of experience.  Dr Roland Ibenipere Funwei has BSc in Human Physiology from University of Port Harcourt, MSc and Ph.D in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He is a Clinical Pharmacology Scientist and molecular biologist. His research expertise is chemotherapy of tropical diseases (malaria genomics). He delved into malaria research under the mentorship of Prof. Catherine O. Falade as a postgraduate supervisee.  Findings from his MSc thesis answered the question of the cardiac safety of the first-line antimalarial drugs (artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine) in the treatment of acute uncomplicated malaria in children from southwest Nigeria. His Ph.D was co-supervised by Prof. Olusola Ojurongbe from the Department of Medical Microbiology, LAUTECH, Ogbomosho. His Ph.D dissertation centered on malaria genomics, particularly on molecular diagnostics, genotype profiling of antigenic Plasmodium falciparum surface proteins and surveillance of antimalarial drugs resistance. Findings from his Ph.D dissertation  was the first to report Plasmodium falciparum histidine rich protein-2 (Pfhrp-2/3) genes deletion from clinical samples from Nigeria. Currently, Dr Roland is a Faculty member, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Babcock University, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Dr. Oluwafemi Babatunde Daodu is a Veterinarian and Virologist with special interest in zoonotic viruses at Human-Animal interphase. He has a decade year of research and academic experience. He currently teaches microbiology of economic and zoonotic importance at basic, clinical and graduate levels of Veterinary medicine.

After earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (2011) with distinction, he got a Tutorial Assistant position at the University of Ibadan which he ran concurrently with his Masters in Veterinary Science in Microbiology (2015). He later got a faculty position at the University of Ilorin. His PhD training in Virology gave him a Visiting Scientist position at the Friedrich Loeffler Institut, Germany and a Viral Haemorrhagic Fever Scholar position at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in 2019. He got the required skills in investigating arboviral diseases of Class III and IV Pathogens. During SARS-COV-2 outbreak, he was deeply involved in biocontainment. In the midst of this outbreak, he characterised rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus, the first of its kind in sub-Sahara Africa, and onward submission of the prototype to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

As an early career researcher, he is streamlining his research on arboviruses at Human-Animal-Interphase. He desires to learn more from global experts and as well in the training and grooming of the upcoming scientists.

Vitalis is an alumnus of the University of Jos and had his master degree at the University of Port Harcourt. Motunrayo Adebukunola Oladimeji

Dr. Motunrayo Adebukunola Oladimeji is a self-motivated and hardworking medical practitioner. Aisha Adam Abdullahi

Azuka Patrick Okwuraiwe

Dr. Patrick is a Biochemist/Senior Research Fellow, at the Centre for Human Virology and Genomics, Microbiology Department of Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Lagos Nigeria. His research is focused on the molecular nature of HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C viral loads and early infant diagnosis of HIV, amongst other viruses. He has gained a wealth of experience on the molecular diagnostics section for 15 years and is also a trained quality management system auditor. His PhD focused on the pattern of hepatitis C genotypes in HIV and hepatitis co-infection. He recently completed a post-doctoral position at the Medical Research Council The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, studying the hepatitis B genomics, using Bioinformatics.

Azuka has been in several research themes and viral pathogens including tuberculosis, Lassa fever, human papillomavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Presently the infectious diseases researcher desires a niche in hepatitis B virus, towards elimination.

Adaeze Elfrida Egwudo
Senior Resident Doctor & Chief Resident Doctor

As a Public Health Physician and the Chief Resident Doctor in the Department of Community Health and Primary Care, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, I am actively involved in clinical, administrative, research activities, organising community outreach programs and regularly participating in seminars and workshops to refine my public speaking and research skills. My Master of Public Health, completed in 2023, included a research project focusing on job satisfaction and migration intentions among healthcare workers. This, along with my postgraduate studies in health management at the University of Lagos, expanded my understanding of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

I am committed to improving public health efficiency and addressing critical challenges through targeted research and hands-on community health initiatives. My career goal is to contribute significantly to  strengthening the healthcare system in Nigeria and beyond.

Tolulope Amos Oyeniyi
Research Fellow

Dr. Tolulope Oyeniyi is a Molecular Entomologist and Cell Biologist. He is a Research Fellow at the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Lagos, Nigeria. He has B.Tech. and M.Sc. in Biochemistry and obtained Ph.D. in Cell Biology and Genetics, specializing in Cell and Molecular Biology. He is an early-career researcher whose focus is on insect vectors of public health significance, particularly application of omics to insecticide resistance mechanisms. Notably, he was the first to report a synergistic effect of the emerging N1575Y allele with the established L1014F allele in the pyrethroid resistance phenotype of Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Nigeria.

He manages Nigeria’s reference laboratory for molecular entomology that supports the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP). He has facilitated various collaborative projects such as ABT Global/PMI Evolve malaria entomology surveillance project, Global Fund Entomology Surveillance Project, US-Naval Medical Research Unit and Malaria Consortium Entomology Projects.

Olubukola Adebisi Odeniran
 Research Fellow

Affiliated Institution & Location: National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Idu Industrial Area Abuja, Nigeria.

Olubukola A. Odeniran is a pharmacist with doctorate degree (2022) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She has worked as a research fellow at the Institute for over fifteen years, and gathered expertise in the area of pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacokinetics, drug development and drug-herb interactions studies in development for tropical diseases. Currently, she is an ISO 17025 2017 certified analyst (HPLC, Dissolution scope)

She has published over fifteen articles in peer-review scientific journals. She possesses qualities of a good leader and can motivate and mentor upcoming young scientists and students. Her recent research focus is in the development of phytomedicines and drug discovery in diseases affecting Nigerians in areas of diabetes mellitus, malaria and hypertension. She looks forward to collaboration, networking with other researchers all over the world to achieve a better health management outcome for Nigerians

Muritala Odidi Suleiman

Nkolika Jacinta Ezekwelu
Public Health Physician

I am a passionate Public Health Physician with a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Lagos. Currently serving as a senior registrar in the Department of Community Health and Primary Care at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, my work spans clinical practice, research, and administrative leadership. Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by a commitment to addressing public health challenges, such as leading research on attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines before their rollout.

I actively collaborate with global health organizations like WHO and NCDC, particularly in vaccine-preventable disease surveillance, including projects on paediatric bacterial meningitis and Rotavirus. My current research focuses on the pressing issues of climate change and its impact on health, alongside efforts to strengthen human resources for health. I am dedicated to using evidence-based approaches to improve health outcomes and contribute to the resilience of healthcare systems.
