Dr. Chioma Kunle-Ope is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Tuberculosis Research (which also serves as the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory), Microbiology Department, NIMR. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Applied Microbiology from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Microbiology from the Department of Microbiology, University of Lagos. Her research is focused on molecular studies of tuberculosis (TB), non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), TB/HIV co-infections and antimicrobial resistance. Currently, she is broadening her research to include microbiomes, aiming to address critical issues related to how pulmonary TB and anti-TB treatment alter the pulmonary microbiome. She has gained a wealth of experience on the conventional and molecular diagnostics of TB for over 18 years and has contributed significantly to national TB control strategies and capacity building. She desires a niche in TB genomics.

 

Apart from her research activities, Chioma is a trained auditor in Laboratory Quality Management System (QMS) using the ISO 15189 Standards and is an internationally certified Biosafety Officer. She has participated in QMS, Biosafety and Infection Control training nationally and internationally.
